Transgender is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. Transgender people may identify as women, men, nonbinary, or in other ways; there is no single experience or expression of being transgender. Gender identity is distinct from sexual orientation, and being transgender does not necessarily mean a person has pursued or wants medical transition.
